"The Indian Institutes of Technology are considering dropping Kota — the coaching capital for IIT aspirants — as an admission test centre amid suspicions of mass cheating in this year’s entrance exam" reports the Telegraph
The Rajasthan town may next year not be allowed to host the IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) its coaching classes have mastered, top institute officials said.
The proposal may be officially discussed as early as tomorrow when IIT directors meet to plan for the 2009 exam, sources said. The meeting of the IIT Joint Administrative Board — the highest policy-making body for the JEE — is in Kharagpur.
On an average, IIT officials estimate, over 20,000 outstation students arrive in Kota to prepare for the JEE at its 129 registered coaching classes. Most appear for the exam in Kota, which brands itself on its official website as an “education city”.
Kota’s success story in churning out IITians is not new, but a source said the trigger for the present concern was an internal report on the conduct of JEE 2008 at exam halls in that town.
A detailed analysis of this year’s JEE results showed up cases where over 20 students who appeared from the same room successfully cracked the exam, the source said. The average student strength per room was less than 40, so over half the students sitting in these rooms cleared the JEE.
In contrast, around 3,20,000 students in all sat for the exam this year and roughly 2 per cent — or one in every 50 applicants — were selected.
“The issue of scrapping Kota as a JEE centre is crucial because we at the IITs can no longer ignore the massive skew in favour of students who clear the entrance after studying at Kota. The skew is not easily explained,” an IIT director said.
Even apart from these specific “cases for concern”, Kota has an inordinately high success rate in sending students to the IITs. Almost one in every three students finally selected to the IITs is from Kota, the director said.
The town’s economy revolves around the success of its coaching classes, and barring it as a test centre is likely to significantly hurt its biggest industry, officials conceded.
The human resource development ministry has already dismissed the Rajasthan government’s proposal to set up an IIT in Kota
Eight more new IITs approved - As many as eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) would be set up in the country during the current academic session to impart high quality technical education, reports the Economic Times
The new IITs would come up in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Indore in Madhya Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs 6,080 crore, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said after a meeting of the Union Cabinet.
With the creation of new IITs, high quality technical education will become accessible to bright students as hardly two per cent of about three lakh students, who appear in the Joint Entrance Examination could get admissions in them, he said. The Cabinet also approved creation of 30 faculty posts per year in the first three years of establishment of each of the new IITs, besides approving the posts of a director and Registrar. A decision was also taken to raise the grade of all existing IIT Directors to Rs 26,000 (fixed) from Rs 25,000 now.
The IITs of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat would commence their classes for about 120 students each for B.Tech programmes through temporary campuses and would be mentored by IITs of Madras, Guwahati and Bombay respectively.
The three IITs of Rajasthan, Punjab and Orissa will start their classes in the campuses of their mentor IITs at Kanpur, Delhi and Kharagpur respectively, while the IITs at Indore and Himachal Pradesh will begin their sessions from the academic session 2009-10.

Many of the students choice is Electronics and Communication Engineering subject
Posted by Anuj Kothari at 5:50 PMElectronics and Communication Engineering was the subject of choice on the first day of general counselling for engineering admissions, as well over half of the 488 students allotted seats on Friday selected that stream.
“I feel there’s good scope in this field… I want to stick to core electronics,” said Rekhna Rajendran, ranked number one by virtue of her age, despite sharing the top score with many others. Fellow top rankers E. Manoj Kumar and D. Jayendirakarthik, on the other hand, also chose ECE, but intend to pursue a software career.
Educational consultant Jeyaprakash Gandhi says students are playing it safe. By choosing ECE, they can be part of the software boom, but in case IT sector demand drops in the next four years, they can still opt for a career in electronics and hardware, he says.
“Last year, ECE and Computer Science were almost equally popular. This year, ECE seems to be the predominant choice,” he points out. While 267 students chose ECE, only 121 chose Computer Science on the first day, including two of the top 10, while Information Technology lagged behind with just eight seats allotted.
Electrical and Electronics Engineering, which also has the virtue of being a circuit branch option with prospects in core industries, snagged 30 students.
Handing over allotment orders to the top 10 rankers in the morning session, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said the government had ensured that the new engineering colleges under its control offered courses in Civil and Mechanical Engineering. These key core subjects would be given a boost in this way, he said.
Students are not buying that message entirely, going by the first day’s choices. Only one student chose Civil Engineering, despite the boom in the infrastructure sector. However, Mechanical Engineering fared better, with 39 takers pushing it to third place.
“It was my first choice. I never considered anything else, since this is what I am interested in,” said J. Pradeep of Erode district, one of the highest ranked students to choose Mechanical Engineering.
Aeronautical Engineering was also a popular niche option, with 16 seats allotted.
One seat each in Chemical, Automobile and Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering rounded off the day’s allotment. Although 660 students were called for counselling, only 490 turned up.
At the end of the day, 73,372 seats were still left vacant, including the 7,154 seats added to the government quota at the last minute on Friday morning from the 45 new engineering colleges which have been approved by the All-India Council for Technical Education and received affiliation from one of the four Anna Universities over the last week.
Another 26 colleges are still in the process of inspection and affiliation and are expected to surrender another 3,500-plus seats to the government quota over the next few days. Over 1.15 lakh candidates are competing for these seats.
The College of Engineering, Guindy, a department of Anna University, Chennai, was the top option in terms of institutions, with 301 students making it their choice. While 107 students chose the Madras Institute of Technology, also a department of the Anna University, Chennai; 5 students chose other government colleges in Chennai and Tiruchi.
Among aided institutions, PSG College of Technology took 69 students, while Thiagarajar College of Engineering took 3. Only three students opted for self-financing colleges on the first day.
Where Can I Get Admission?
This is one of the most common questions in every students minds.
Well, to help you I have tried to simplify it a bit so that you can get an overall view where to apply and how and most importantly in which round to apply in that particular college.
[1]First you need to get the General Merit List of CET for year 2007.
[2]Then depending on your category you can check your final merit list status.
Check Final Merit Status for Maharashtra Candidates
Check Final Merit Status for All India Candidates (AIEEE)
Check Final Merit Status for J&K Candidates
Check Final Merit Status for MKB Candidates
[3]The in the download section in year 2007 CAP Process Data you can find various files which contain data about different CAP rounds ( till cap round three ). The cut-offs are which we will focus on.
Now this is simple. Just note down your details of the final merit list status as explained is [2].
You can compare it with last years cut-offs (from [3]) and get an idea where to apply.
If this is so easy then why do we need to write this post. The trick is here. You must have done comparison by CET marks but will it remain same every year? Obviously no!
Then what will remain same? RANKS
Also not those ranks which is printed on your CET result. The rank of the general merit is what will remain same.
So you have your rank by checking the final merit status[2]. Compare that rank with that in the 2007 year merit rank status file which you downloaded is [1]. The later will give you detailed information about colleges you should aim, in which round and all other things in the most precise way!
